Ah, Robotech. Still an enduring favorite to this day. It was a cartoon series that was way ahead of its time, or perhaps just way too mature for an audience my age when I first discovered the show. I just remember seeing a transforming robot on the first show I saw (episode #5, incidentally entitled “Transformation”) and I was hooked.
I seem to recall that it wasn’t always easy to find Robotech toys back in the day, or perhaps they were just more expensive or that Transformers took precedence in my discretionary toy budget. Can’t remember. But there were some cool Robotech toys and I didn’t get my hands on even a fraction of them.
I did amass a complete collection of these adorable chubby Veritech fighters– Miriya’s, Rick’s, and Max’s. These are their guardian configurations, halfway between jet and robot:

This is the big ship of the first part of Robotech — the SDF-1. In fact, the “transformation” in episode #5 mentioned above was when the entire spaceship transformed into a robot! Rockin’! This small replica did not transform, though I believe there was a larger replica that did.

The first part of Robotech (Macross) featured a number of Destroids. This was my favorite, the Excalibur:

He is missing his 6-pack of missiles off of his upper right shoulder. If you are familiar with the Battletech RPG series, this might look familiar. For some bizarre reasons that I never understood when I was younger (but could probably look up pretty easily these days if I cared enough), a number of mech designs were shared between Battletech and the anime on which Robotech was based.
Yeah, no problem dude, I do like to plug blogs I find interesting. The thing is, I actually do really like these figures. I mean, they aren’t horrible because they’re crappy or cheesy or anything like that. No, the thing that makes them horrible is the fact that there were so many ways around the whole “You can’t legally use the Jetfire mold” thing and THIS was what Matchbox chose. That’s what puts them in the Hall of Shame for me. I mean, Matchbox could have just made a seven or eight inch version of the Jetfire mold or something like that. Hell, that’s what KO companies did in the 80s. I remember owning this really awesome KO with the Fokker colors that was just as articulated as the eleven or twelve inch Jetfire mold and was probably less fragile as well. Why Matchbox didn’t do something like that is beyond me.
hello there, i was wondering where you got the FAT veritechs?? id love to add them to my collection
oops my email address is also fire73ba [at] yahoo.com
I probably bought one or two of them. I wager I procured the broken one from someone who wasn’t interested anymore. Used you have all the Super Veritech powerup pieces as well. I gave all 3 to a friend some time ago, after I took these pictures from internet posterity.
