It was quite revolutionary for PC audio at the time since it was basically a stock <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adlib\">AdLib<\/a> FM synthesizer card and but with an 8-bit, monophonic digital to audio converter (DAC) that could output raw PCM data.<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/eggs\/images\/soundblaster.jpg\" alt=\"Classic Sound Blaster box\" \/><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>One of the more curious artifacts of the original Sound Blaster is the frequency divisor used to initialize the DAC for PCM playback.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The frequency divisor is a signed byte (range -128..127). If you Google for the formula to convert this to a frequency value you will find some conflicting formulas. I believe this is the true formula (formula #1):<\/p>\n<pre>  sample_rate = 256 - (1000000 \/ i)<\/pre>\n<p>Some sites contend that this is the right one (formula #2):<\/p>\n<pre>  sample_rate = (1000000) \/ (256 - divisor)<\/pre>\n<p>Here is some quick code that I wrote to compare the formulas.<\/p>\n<pre>#include &lt;stdio.h&gt;\r\n\r\nint main()\r\n{\r\n    int i;\r\n\r\n    for (i = -128; i < 128; i++) {\r\n        if (!i)  \/* refrain from dividing by zero *\/\r\n            continue;\r\n        printf (\"divisor %4d (%02X), formula #1 = %d Hz, #2 = %d Hz\\n\",\r\n            i, (i &#038; 0xFF),\r\n            256 - (1000000 \/ i),\r\n            1000000 \/ (256 - i));\r\n    }\r\n\r\n    return 0;\r\n}\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The first formula progresses from 8068 Hz -> 1000256 Hz as the divisor runs from -128 -> -1. 0 is an invalid divisor (division by zero). The frequencies go negative when the divisor is positive. With the second formula, on the other hand, the frequency runs from 2604 Hz -> 7751 Hz as the divisor runs from -128 -> 127.<\/p>\n<p>Further, when I examine my .VOC demuxer in the <a href=\"http:\/\/xinehq.de\">xine library<\/a> I find that I used the first formula and it seems to work. The VOC format was originated by Creative and is closely tied to the original Sound Blaster.
