I figured that there must be some site out there that documents such transitions and lo and behold:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberatedgames.com\/\">http:\/\/www.liberatedgames.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wager there is some custom FMV code in there somewhere. We already know for a fact that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberatedgames.com\/game.php?game_id=7\">Descent II<\/a> source contains a 16-bit Interplay MVE decoder<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberatedgames.com\/game.php?game_id=11\">Quake II<\/a> source contains a Quake II Cinematic (.cin) decoder<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberatedgames.com\/game.php?game_id=90\">Quake III<\/a> source contains a RoQ decoder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A number of the games listed at Liberated Games are only free in that the binary executable and data are available, but no source code. <\/p>\n<p>A few more items I would like to investigate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/liberatedgames.com\/game.php?game_id=38\">Hexen II<\/a> is open source (GPL). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/windows\/hexen-ii\/screenshots\/gameShotId,12237\/\">This screenshot<\/a> makes it look like the game has some FMV. This game is based on the Quake engine. Per my understanding, Quake did not feature FMV. Quake II did.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/liberatedgames.com\/game.php?game_id=87\">Stargunner<\/a> is free for download. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/dos\/stargunner\/screenshots\/gameShotId,69087\/\">This screenshot<\/a> looks like it might be FMV.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/liberatedgames.com\/game.php?game_id=37\">Hidden &#038; Dangerous<\/a> is free for download. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/windows\/hidden-dangerous\/screenshots\">These screenshots<\/a> may or may not represent FMV.<\/li>\n<li>Further, <a href=\"http:\/\/liberatedgames.com\/game.php?game_id=42\">The Ur-quan Masters (Star Control 2)<\/a> has released both source and data. Part of the data available for download is a  speech pack. Nothing too special; all of the speech is available in Ogg Vorbis format.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Update:<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldskool.org\/\">Trixter<\/a> sends this intelligence about the titles above:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Hexen II &#8212; can&#8217;t verify if that&#8217;s video, but there are Animation credits in the game so it is probably yes.  However, most times that stuff is a FLIC file.
